Pain Management

Pain is a huge problem in our companions, it is very difficult to recognize the signs of pain in our pets as they show pain differently to you and me.

A dog may become more introverted, a cat may hide and no longer jump on counters. The American Animal Hospital Association and the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Managment recommends using a pain scoring system to evaulate pain levels during a veterinary examination.

There are some signs of pain that you can identify in your pet at home:
  • Decreased activity
  • Decreased grooming (cats)
  • Change in affection seeking
  • Less play
  • Bathroom accidents
  • Hyperventilation (rapid shallow breathing)
  • Agitation
  • Decreased Appetite
  • Introversion/ hiding (cats)
  • Stiff movement, slow to rise
Fortunately we have many options available to treat pain. Physical medicine & rehabilitation can help to remove the sources of pain. Pharmaceuticals and supplements help the body to cope with pain and reduce inflammation. There are many newer drugs available that have fewer side effects and provide better relief than traditional pain meds. A combination of drugs at low levels is often better than just one medicine. Supplements can help to reduce muscle spasm and joint inflammation, take care when purchasing supplements as there are no FDA standards for minimum concentrations. For example, glucosamine supplements vary widely in amount and quality of the active ingredient. Check with your veterinarian - if you can bring in the product label that is really helpful.
